Could apprenticeships lead to a successful career?

It did for these famous faces. David Beckham, Stella McCartney, Karen Millen and Jamie Oliver to name just a few all started as apprentices.

Did you know that when David Beckham signed for Manchester United on his 14th Birthday, he also signed to their Youth Training Scheme, via the “on-the-job” training course for school leavers aged between 16-17 years.

Stella McCartney may have a famous father, that didn’t stop her becoming an apprentice at a young age to Edward Sexton at Savile Row. Where she went on to learn the craft of fine tailoring, an experience that has influenced her sharp pieces that she has gone on to create over the years.

Stella even designed the Team GB London 2012 Olympic kits.

Karen Millen, a famous local high street designer, started her career as apprentice very local to IPS, here in Rochester! Karen trained at the Medway College of Design. She founded her business in 1981 with just a loan of £100 and bought 1,000 meters of white cotton and begun selling white shirts to her friends; this soon turned into her super successful multimillion pound fashion brand which Karen sold in 2004.

The naked chef. We have all heard of Jamie Oliver but did you know he left school at the age of sixteen with just two GSCEs and attended Westminster Catering College? He then went on to earn a City & Guilds National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in home economics – achieved through assessment and training – giving him an apprenticeship: an NVQ, plus key skills and other technical certificates. Jamie Oliver has gone on to open his own apprenticeship programme called Fifteen, helping recruit apprentices to train and work alongside professional chefs.

Apprenticeships offer a useful route into the career that you want to make for yourself. Find out how to become an apprentice by clicking here.
