Apprenticeships offer one of the most rewarding options as you can learn whilst you earn, which is a win-win.

From understanding what an apprenticeship is, what it entails to finding the right one for you, we’ve got you covered. We’ll cover all the essentials so you can start your journey with confidence.
First things first, here are a few key points you’ll want to think about:
What exactly does an apprenticeship require?
Which industry excites you the most?
What type of apprenticeship best suits your goals?
Where should you look for vacancies?
How do you tailor your CV and make a standout application?
Let’s dive into each step and get you on your way to landing that perfect apprenticeship!
What is an Apprenticeship?
In simple terms, an apprenticeship is a combination of work and study. You’ll be working alongside experienced professionals, learning the skills you need for your chosen career, while also gaining a qualification. Apprenticeships often involve both on-the-job training and off-the-job learning, which could take place in a classroom or through online modules.
It’s not just about getting qualified either—apprenticeships are a fantastic way to network. You’ll meet people who are just starting out like you and those who are already established in the industry, creating valuable connections that could help your future career.
What Does an Apprenticeship Entail?
Being an apprentice is exciting, but it also requires commitment. Alongside your practical work, you’ll have training sessions to develop your knowledge. This could involve anything from attending workshops to completing assignments. Depending on the level and type of apprenticeship, the program could last anywhere from one to four years, so make sure you’re ready to stick with it.
But don’t worry—it’s not all work and no play! You’ll have the opportunity to grow personally and professionally, and by the time you finish, you’ll have real-world experience, qualifications, and the confidence to progress in your career.
The Industry You’re Interested In
Before you think about applying, take some time to research and think about what industry excites you. What are you passionate about? What are your interests? Are you more technical or creative? What are your strengths? These are all things to think about.
Whatever your interests are, try to narrow them down so you can research the industries and apprenticeships that match. Part of this research could be looking at businesses that interest you. You never know if they might take on apprentices or be open to taking on an apprentice.
What Apprenticeship Might You Want to Do?
Now that you’ve picked the industry that excites you, it’s time to look at apprenticeships. There are a range of different apprenticeship levels from beginner (level 2) all the way to a degree apprenticeship (levels 6 and 7). Knowing your future goals and aspirations will really help you at this stage. Think about where you want to be in five years, and this will help you to know what is best for you.
It’s important not to rush this part. Take your time. Research apprenticeships in your chosen industry. Look at what’s available and consider what will provide the best path to your future.
For example, if you’re interested in analysing data then a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship might be better suited to you than a Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketer apprenticeship. The Multi-Channel Marketer apprenticeship might suit someone who likes a blend of creativity and analytics.
It’s all about knowing what your career aspirations are and how well the apprenticeship matches that.
Look at Vacancies
Now that you know what industry and apprenticeship you want, it’s time to find vacancies! There are plenty of places to look for opportunities, including our website, job boards, and dedicated apprenticeship portals. You can also reach out directly to companies you’re interested in to see if they offer apprenticeships, even if they aren’t currently advertising any roles.
Remember to check the requirements for each position carefully. Some might ask for specific qualifications, while others are open to anyone with the right attitude and willingness to learn. If you are unsure of the requirements contact them to ask.
Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get the first role you apply for—apply to a range of positions to improve your chances.
Tailor Your CV
Your CV is your first impression, so make it count! Tailor it to the apprenticeship you're applying for by highlighting your relevant skills, experiences, and any qualifications you’ve earned. Keep it brief and focused on what makes you a strong candidate for the role.
Make sure your CV is concise and focused—two pages is the maximum! And don’t forget to proofread for any spelling or grammar mistakes before sending it off.
Create a Good Application
Now your CV is ready, it’s time to focus on your application. Along with a tailored CV, write a thoughtful cover letter that explains why you're interested in the apprenticeship, why you’ve chosen that particular company, and how your skills and aspirations align with the role. Double-check for any errors before sending.
This is your opportunity to show potential employers that you’re not only qualified but genuinely excited about the opportunity. And of course, double-check your application before sending it—small mistakes can make a big difference.
