In this blog, we hear from John Beerling, who has worked at Southern Water for the past three years and is currently completing an engineering apprenticeship through IPS. John reflects on his journey from starting as a Process Operator to pursuing an apprenticeship as a way to build on his operational experience, develop new technical skills, and create long-term career progression within the business.
“It’s about developing yourself, learning new skills, and setting yourself up for the future.”
John Beerling has worked at Southern Water for the past three years and is currently completing an engineering apprenticeship through IPS. Starting as a Process Operator, John saw the apprenticeship as a way to build on his operational experience, develop technical skills, and create long-term career progression within the business.
“I saw the apprenticeship opportunity come up through Southern Water and just went for it. I thought it would be an amazing way to improve my skills and create more opportunities for myself.”
Choosing an Apprenticeship Path
For John, the apprenticeship was about professional growth while staying in a working environment. After around a year and a half as a Process Operator, he recognised the value of formal engineering knowledge alongside hands-on experience.
Before applying, he spoke with engineers who had already completed the programme. Their experiences gave him confidence that, while challenging, it would be worthwhile.
Starting the Apprenticeship Journey
John admits that he initially underestimated the commitment required.
“I didn’t fully appreciate that it would be such a long process. But I was willing to commit myself to it.”
Knowing others had successfully completed the programme motivated him to push through the more demanding stages.
Skills That Make a Difference
Throughout the apprenticeship, John has developed skills that directly support his work at Southern Water. Early training focused on:
- Electrical skills
- PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) training
- Core engineering and fault-finding principles
“Learning electrical skills and PLC really stood out for me. Those skills have a direct influence on my day-to-day work, which has been really good.”
The practical nature of the training allowed John to apply what he learnt immediately on site, making the lessons feel relevant and impactful.
Growing Confidence and Responsibility
Since starting the apprenticeship, John has noticed a clear increase in his confidence at work.
“I’ve become more willing to put myself out there, voice suggestions, and stand out. It’s helped me speak up more and be brought into different circles at work.”
As he has demonstrated his skills, John has been given more responsibility on site.
“The more I’ve demonstrated what I can do, the more it’s been noticed. I’m still being shadowed, but I’ve been given a much more hands-on role and more responsibility.”
This trust has reinforced the benefits of the apprenticeship for both his development and the wider business.

Balancing Work, Training, and Home Life
Balancing a full-time apprenticeship with work and a daily commute of around two hours wasn’t always easy.
“I won’t lie, the first year was quite difficult. It was five days a week, and I live an hour away each way.”
Moving to a day-release model in the second year made a big difference, helping John better manage work commitments and home life.
Looking Ahead
The apprenticeship has helped John gain a clearer vision for his future.
“It’s shined a brighter light on what’s ahead. By the time I finish the apprenticeship, it’ll open more doors and give me better opportunities.”
Would You Recommend an Apprenticeship?
John strongly recommends an apprenticeship to anyone, regardless of age or career stage.
“If you’re young, it’s a great starting point for your career. Even as a mature student, if you have the opportunity, go for it. It opens so many doors.”
What Being an Apprentice Means
For John, being an apprentice is about continuous growth and creating opportunities.
“It’s about developing yourself, learning new skills, and setting yourself up for the future. It’s definitely been worth the commitment.”
