Men's Mental Health matters. Yet too often, men feel they have to cope in silence. This November, we're breaking the stigma and highlighting ways men can look after their mental wellbeing, because no one should have to face life's pressures alone.

Why talk about Men's Mental Health?
Men are often taught to "stay strong" or "keep it together" which can make it hard to reach out for help. Yet, mental health challenges do not discriminate; anyone can experience anxiety, stress or depression. Talking about mental health isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. By breaking down the stereotypes and normalising these discussions, we can create a culture where everyone feels safe and able to speak up.
"Man Up" Stigma
Man-up is a term that used to be used towards men in a derogatory nature when they used to speak up or show signs of needing help with their mental health. The stigma surrounding the term "man up" refers to the societal pressure that men are expected to suppress their emotions and maintain a stoic demeanour. The phrase reinforces harmful stereotypes, implying that expressing vulnerability is a sign of weakness, when it isn't. Speaking about your emotions is a sign of strength and acknowledgement.

MANUP? Charity
MANUP? is a UK-based charity dedicated to challenging the stigma surrounding male mental health. The charity was founded by a gentleman who wanted to change mental health for the better, and has since grown into a fully registered charity that raises awareness through different initiatives. They also collaborate with businesses, schools, the NHS and other organisations to break down barriers and promote open conversations about men's mental health.

Self Help
Self-help can be an effective first step for supporting mental health by empowering you to build foundational skills, increase self-awareness and prevent more serious issues. It can be a convenient starting point for those who are short on time, face accessibility issues or are not ready for formal treatment. Self-help can be the first stepping stone towards a recovery and will:
Boost Confidence: Successfully solving a problem, no matter how small, can increase your confidence in your ability to manage future difficulties
Improve coping: Techniques like deep breathing, journaling and problem-solving provide a set of tools to navigate stressful situations and difficult emotions
Enhance self-esteem: By taking steps to care for yourself and celebrate small achievements, you can combat negative self-talk and build a healthier self-image.

What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of focusing your attention on the present moment with openness and without judgment. It involves becoming aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings as they are, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. By cultivating mindfulness through simple techniques like breathing exercises or meditation, people can reduce stress, improve concentration, and enhance overall well-being.

Celebrities and Mental Health
Mental health can affect anyone, regardless of background, status, or success. When public figures speak out about their struggles, they remind us that no one is immune and that recovery and resilience are possible. By sharing their journeys, these men are helping to create a culture of openness, empathy, and support.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has spoken openly about his experiences with depression, reminding others that even the strongest people can struggle and that asking for help is a sign of strength.
The late Robin Williams, beloved for his humour and warmth, also battled mental health challenges, and his story continues to inspire awareness and compassion around depression and suicide prevention.
Roman Kemp has been a powerful advocate for men’s mental health since the loss of his close friend, using his platform to encourage open conversations and raise awareness about suicide.
Meanwhile, Eminem has shared how therapy and creativity helped him manage his mental health struggles and recovery journey, showing that healing can take many forms.
Together, their stories remind us that no one is alone and that talking about mental health can save lives.
