What is the Prevent Strategy?
The Prevent Strategy is part of the UK’s wider counter-terrorism approach. Its main aim is to stop people from being drawn into terrorism or extremist ideologies. It focuses on early support, awareness, and safeguarding rather than punishment.
Why it matters to you
As a learner, you are developing your independence, forming opinions and engaging more with the wider world - both online and offline.
This makes it important to understand how to recognise harmful influences and where to go for support if something doesn't feel right.

What is Extremism?
Extremism refers to beliefs or actions that oppose fundamental values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect for different faiths and beliefs. It can take many forms, including political, religious, or ideological.
How people can be influenced
Extremist groups often use social media, online forums, or even face-to-face conversations to influence others. They may:
- Spread misleading or false information
- Target individuals who feel isolated or unsure of their identity
- Use emotional or persuasive language to draw people in
Recognising Warning Signs
It’s not about judging people, it’s about noticing changes that might indicate someone needs support. These can include:
- Sudden changes in behaviour or beliefs
- Withdrawal from friends or usual activities
- Expressing extreme or intolerant views
- Increased secrecy, especially online
What should you do?
If you are concerned about yourself or someone else:
- Speak to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, tutor, or safeguarding officer
- Contact student support services at your school or college
- Report concerns anonymously through appropriate channels if needed
Remember, seeking help is about support and safety, not getting someone in trouble.

- Question what you read - check sources carefully
- Avoid sharing personal information with unknown individuals
- Report harmful or suspicious content
- Take breaks from content that makes you feel uncomfortable or pressured
