‘Today, apprenticeships have become a mainstay of businesses, large and small. Within this room alone there’s half a trillion pounds worth of businesses that are supporting the apprentice scheme. So that's backed by big money and therefore they clearly understand the importance’
– Ed Carter, National Grid Partners speaking at #EngAwards23
As the landscape of education and career opportunities continues to evolve, the traditional path from classroom to workplace is being reimagined. Informed students are now presented with an alternative route to professional success through apprenticeships. These hands-on learning opportunities have gained recognition as a valuable career path that allows students to embark on their journeys with eyes wide open. In this article, we will delve into the world of apprenticeships, highlighting their benefits and shedding light on why informed students should consider them as a viable option.
‘It’s important to open your mind up about Apprenticeships because we live in a manufacturing society and we need talented young people who can develop new systems of working, equipment, repair machinery, all the sort of things we take for granted. We need our young people to move into these roles’
– Kerry Jones, Technical and Commercial Director at IPS International Ltd
Understanding Apprenticeships:
Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to kick start your career. You will be paid at least the National Minimum Apprenticeship wage, with many employers paying significantly more. Apprenticeship durations range from a minimum of one year to complete, with advanced and higher qualifications requiring up to four years to achieve completion. Apprenticeships are an excellent opportunity to gain qualifications specific to the industry you want to progress in; all whilst earning a wage and gaining work experience. At the same time, you are working ‘on-the-job’ alongside experienced staff who will train and support you on a day-to-day basis, with training for your qualification being delivered by IPS, either in your workplace or at one of our training centres.
‘Engage early, hybrid learning, an opportunity to earn from day one. So it works for us, it clearly works for you.’
– Ed Carter speaking at #EngAwards23
Benefits for Informed Students:
1. One of the most appealing aspects of apprenticeships is the ability to earn a wage while learning. Unlike traditional education paths, where students often accrue substantial debt, apprenticeships provide a source of income from day one.
2. Apprenticeships offer an immersive learning environment. Students work alongside experienced professionals, gaining insights and skills that can't be replicated in a classroom setting alone. This experience not only enhances employability but also boosts confidence in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.
3. Apprenticeships focus on preparing students for the job market. From day one, participants are exposed to industry-specific challenges, workplace etiquette, and collaboration dynamics. This early exposure enhances their ability to seamlessly transition into full-time roles after completing the apprenticeship.
4. Building a network of industry professionals is crucial for career advancement. Apprenticeships provide an ideal platform to connect with mentors, colleagues, and potential employers. These connections often lead to job offers and further opportunities within the industry.
5. Apprenticeships are not limited to traditional trades. Informed students can explore opportunities in a wide range of sectors, including business skills, IT, engineering, manufacturing, automotive, construction, logistics, and social care. This diversity allows students to pursue their passions and find a path that aligns with their interests and skills.
‘So in the week where our government has decided that some degrees are worth more than others, the value of apprenticeships and apprentices continues to grow. Grain looks forward to continuing their relationship with National Grid. Degrees and university are not for everyone, and therefore apprenticeships are a key part of our business strategy for the next 25 years and trying to get to net zero.’ Ed Carter Speaking at #EngAwards23
Informed students today have an exciting opportunity to embark on their careers with their eyes wide open, considering apprenticeships as a viable alternative to traditional education paths. The benefits of hands-on experience, career readiness, industry connections, and diverse pathways make apprenticeships an attractive option. As the workforce becomes increasingly competitive and dynamic, apprenticeships empower students to not only learn but to thrive in their chosen professions. By choosing this path, students can gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to navigate the ever-evolving world of work successfully. According to UK Government 78% of employers said apprenticeships helped them improve productivity.
