A higher national certificate is the first level of higher education (level 4), a progression route for all learners that have completed a level 3 or equivalent course. This programme allows learners to study part-time over a two-year period, which means attending one full day a week across two academic years.

This course offers learners a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units in each pathway. This builds a foundation for learners to progress further onto either a higher national diploma or in some cases a full engineering degree.

This course is two years for a part-time student over two separate academic years, starting in September and finishing in May/June.

This course is delivered in a classroom-based setting

This qualification gives the opportunity for learners to progress further into Higher Education, either a Higher National Diploma
(level 5) or a degree (level 6).
